This article was inspired by the ninetieth birthday this year of the outstanding Chopin interpreter Lidia Grychtołowna. It comprises the pianist’s memories and a description of the sources of the pedagogic and performance mastery of her mentor, Professor Wanda Chmielowska, who was the daughter of the outstanding teacher and pianist Stanisław Szlezyngier, a graduate of the Warsaw Institute of Music. The history of the musical Szlezyngier family has yet to be discussed at length in Polish letters. As part of the first extended portrait of Stanisław Szlezyngier, I provide information about his life and work, taken from archive materials held in St Petersburg, and also hitherto unknown facts about the St Petersburg period in the work of Wanda Chmielowska. Also addressed are the links between Chmielowska’s publications on methodology and the works written by her father around the turn of the twentieth century. As a true Polish patriot, he promoted the music of Fryderyk Chopin in the Russian Empire, demonstrating that work on Chopin’s compositions should form the crowning point in the training of pianists.
