THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE INSTRUMENTAL OUTPUT OF IGNACY FELIKS DOBRZYŃSKI FOR THE FORGING OF A NATIONAL STYLE IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY POLISH MUSIC

Agnieszka Chwiłek

Abstract

The literature devoted to the music of Ignacy Feliks Dobrzyński comprises mainly a small number of articles on his operatic output and mentions of the composer’s oeuvre in monographic studies of the history of nineteenth-century Polish music. The subject of this composer’s instrumental music is also not exhausted by Maciej Negrey’s article on the Symphony No. 2 in C minor and William Smialek’s monograph. Given the size and quality of this oeuvre, its generic diversity and its suffusion with national elements, Dobrzyński should be regarded as the most outstanding non-exiled Polish composer of the first half of the nineteenth century. In this article, I draw attention to his most important instrumental works (in sonata cycle form) and two ways of composing in the national spirit which Dobrzyński employed in those works. The starting point for my considerations will be selected theoretical and historical texts by Kazimierz Brodziński postulating the need to forge national art.
